The Shirley House. NPS 2000 Tour Guide: Union troops called it "the white house," and it is the only surviving wartime structure in the park. During the siege it served as headquarters for the 45th Illinois Infantry, members of which built hundreds of bombproof shelters around it to protect themselves against Confederate artillery fire. It has been restored to its 1863 appearance

Thayer's Approach, US NPS 2000 Tour Guide: During the afternoon of May 22, Union troops commanded by Brig. Gen. John M. Thayer stormed up this hill toward Confederates dug in at the top. They were stopped by geography and enemy fire. Later, Thayer's men began digging a six-foot deep approach trench toward the Southern position. His soldiers dug the tunnel beneath the road to avoid crossing the ridge, where they would be exposed to Confederate fire.

Official National Park Handbook 137: The 202-foot obelisk is a tribute to the achievements of the Union Navy in the campaign to reopen the Mississippi River. Statues of four fleet commanders (Admirals Farragut and Porter and Flag Officers Davis and Foote) surround the base. Between the road and the memorial, note the large bronze plaque recounting the achievements of the inland navy

Missouri Monument Dedicated on October 17, 1917, the Missouri Memorial stands just south of the Stockade Redan at Tour Stop 10. The Missouri Memorial is unique in that it is the only memorial in the park that honors the troops of both sides. Missouri contributed 42 regiments to the Vicksburg Campaign; 27 Union and 15 Confederate. The memorial sits on the spot where two opposing Missouri units fought during the battle. Vicksburg National Cemetery was established by an act of Congress in 1866. Vicksburg National Cemetery has the distinction of having the largest number of Civil War interments of any national cemetery in the United States. Of the approximate 17,000 Union veterans, only 5,000 are known.
